Resumen: La asignatura Química en la Frontera con la Biología pretende mostrar la relevancia de la aplicación de principios de Química en el conocimiento de los procesos biológicos a nivel molecular y de la preparación de moléculas de interés biológico. Para ello, se abordará el estudio de la estructura, comportamiento químico y función de productos naturales o de interés biológico. Además, se expondrá la síntesis de biomoléculas sencillas y sus correspondientes análogos, y se incidirá en la importancia de la modificación estructural para la modulación de la actividad biológica. Por otra parte, se mostrará la aplicación de enzimas como catalizadores de procesos de síntesis asimétrica (en particular se planteará su uso para la obtención de biomoléculas sencillas enantioméricamente puras). A lo largo de la asignatura, se abordarán aquellos aspectos que destaquen por su novedad e interés actual.

Abstract: The subject Chemistry at the Frontiers of Biology aims to show the importance of applying chemistry principles to understand biological processes at molecular level and to the preparation of biologically active molecules. The study of the structure, chemical behaviour and function of natural products and compounds of biological interest will be addressed. In addition, the synthesis of simple biomolecules and their corresponding analogues will be covered, and the importance of structural modification for modulating biological activity will be highlighted. On the other hand, the applicability of enzymes as catalysts for asymmetric synthetic transformations will be shown (in particular their use for the preparation of biomolecules in enantiomerically pure form). Throughout the course, those aspects that stand out for its novelty and current interest will be addressed.
