Luc Schuiten: soñando la utopía verde = Luc Schuiten: dreams of a green utopia

In her article written in 1995 for the Revue d’architecture Neuf, MarieClaire Regniers observed how “in the contemporary architecture scene in Belgium, Luc Schuiten stands out from the rest,” as someone who goes beyond “the rigid and traditional lines of construction” and “tirelessly draws numerous projects guided by a quest for other lifestyles. A way of thinking that has shaped a new type of architecture based on a poetical vision, where invention and a connection with nature reign supreme.” Twenty years later, in a context in which global warming, climate change, carbon emissions and the Kyoto Protocol are firmly lodged in our collective consciousness, and now that terms such as “bioclimatic” and “sustainable” have long since passed into common parlance, to the point of running the risk of being replaced as obsolete, the position of Luc Schuiten (Brussels, 1944) in—or perhaps beyond—architecture’s outskirts, has not changed that much. Immersed in his search for a fusion between city and landscape, architecture and nature, ever since the end of the 1960s, Schuiten occupies a place in which he combines the hyper-realism of construction with a militant utopia; his work is most definitely not about LEED classifications or energy performance certificates (...)
