How these forces vary as a function of the extracellular rigidity is critical to understanding the regulatory functions that drive important phenomena such as wound healing or muscle contraction. In recognition of this fact, experiments have been conducted to understand cell rigidity-sensing properties under known conditions of the extracellular environment, opening new possibilities for modeling this active behaviour. In this work, we provide a physics-based constitutive model taking into account the main structural components of the cell to reproduce its most significant contractile properties such as the traction forces exerted as a function of time and the extracellular stiffness. This model shows how the interplay between the time-dependent response of the acto-myosin contractile system and the elastic response of the cell components determine the mechano-sensing behaviour of single cells. 000032158 536__ $$9info:eu-repo/grantAgreement/ES/MINECO/DPI2009-14115-CO3-01$$9info:eu-repo/grantAgreement/ES/MINECO/BES-2010-029927-FPI$$9info:eu-repo/grantAgreement/EUR/FP7/ERC2012-StG-306751 000032158 540__ $$9info:eu-repo/semantics/openAccess$$aAll rights reserved$$uhttp://www.europeana.eu/rights/rr-f/ 000032158 590__ $$a3.145$$b2014 000032158 591__ $$aENGINEERING, BIOMEDICAL$$b17 / 76 = 0.224$$c2014$$dQ1$$eT1 000032158 591__ $$aBIOPHYSICS$$b26 / 73 = 0.356$$c2014$$dQ2$$eT2 000032158 655_4 $$ainfo:eu-repo/semantics/article$$vinfo:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersion 000032158 700__ $$aKamm, R.D. 000032158 700__ $$0(orcid)0000-0002-9864-7683$$aGarcía-Aznar, J.M.$$uUniversidad de Zaragoza 000032158 7102_ $$15004$$2605$$aUniversidad de Zaragoza$$bDepartamento de Ingeniería Mecánica$$cMec. de Medios Contínuos y Teor. de Estructuras 000032158 773__ $$g13, 2 (2014), 451-462$$pBiomech. model. mechanobiol.$$tBiomechanics and Modeling in Mechanobiology$$x1617-7959 000032158 8564_ $$s1063769$$uhttps://zaguan.unizar.es/record/32158/files/texto_completo.pdf$$yPostprint 000032158 8564_ $$s89971$$uhttps://zaguan.unizar.es/record/32158/files/texto_completo.jpg?subformat=icon$$xicon$$yPostprint 000032158 909CO $$ooai:zaguan.unizar.es:32158$$particulos$$pdriver 000032158 951__ $$a2018-01-12-13:46:45 000032158 980__ $$aARTICLE
